Safety Issues with Neon Lights

Neon lights> are an extremely important form of advertising. There are very few methods of advertising that can compete with these signs for cost effectiveness. There are, however, some safety issues to consider.Neon signs are electrical. They are not just electrical but high voltage electric. While they do not draw a tremendous amount of current from your electrical outlet, the transformer boosts the voltage to 12,000 - 15,000 volts. That kind of voltage is needed to make neon gas glow. It probably isn’t hard to imagine that that kind of voltage will make you glow, too! It is for that reason you want to order your signs from reputable US-based companies so that you get good quality, safety-inspected wiring and transformers.

You want to make sure that your sign has UL approved transformers. These transformers have built-in safety features like circuit breakers. Most neon lights that you purchase over the Internet come with the transformers attached to the light. This is the best way for most people to buy neon signage. If you need to put your transformer somewhere other than having it attached to the sign, it is best to have an electrician do the wiring. It might look simple, but it can be a little more complicated than you think. Even though you are paying an electrician a few dollars for what looks like an easy project, you are, in fact, paying him for what he knows. You are also paying him to avoid mistakes like crossing these high voltage lines during installation, which could cause a fire.

Neon lights are used in bars, casinos, hotels, entertainment venues and services. Neon lights have been used in commercial applications since the early 1900’s; and when first invented, they were considered a marketing breakthrough.

Not much is different now than it was then. Neon signs by nature with their colorful lights attract the human eye. The more eyes you can get pointed at your business, the more sales you will get. So now that you know why you need a neon light, here is what you need to know to buy one.

The first thing you will have to decide is whether to get a stock neon light or to have one customized especially for your business. If it is in your budget, a custom design neon light is always a good choice. A custom sign gives you the ability to be creative and really showcase the way you want your company presented.

How do neon lights work?

By definition, the atoms of inert gases such as helium, neon or argon never form stable molecules by chemically bonding with other atoms. One need apply only a modest electric voltage to electrodes at the ends of a glass tube containing the inert gas and the light begins to glow.

The voltage across a discharge tube will accelerate a free electron up to some maximum kinetic energy. An ionized atom has had an electron plucked out of an orbital to make it a "free" particle, and the atom it leaves behind has become a positively charged ion. The resulting plasma of charged ions and electrons carries the electric current between the tube's electrodes.

These neon lights are mercury discharge tubes with special coatings on their inner walls. The ultraviolet light emitted by the mercury discharge inside a tube is absorbed by the coating. Depending on the exact material of the coating, a whole range of colors can be obtained.

As an alternative to being removed by an energetic collision, an electron on an atom can be excited. One speaks of the electron as having been promoted to an orbital of higher energy. When the electron eases back down to its original orbital, a particle of light  carries away the energy of excitation¿and the discharge tube glows! A photon's energy  depends on the energy difference between orbitals.

Kooky Howard Hughes Rumor Flickers Anew at Las Vegas Neon Museum

The Neon Museum will rank as must-see for many LA visitors the next time they hit the Strip. Among the attractions is this one as highlighted by Glionna

Outside the museum sits the refurbished silver slipper that legend says once spooked Howard Hughes. The billionaire reportedly suspected the slipper that revolved outside the Silver Slipper casino was being used as a government surveillance ploy because it often paused momentarily, pointing at his Desert Inn penthouse. Some say Hughes just didn’t like the neon light shining in his window, but he eventually bought the casino and slipper, which he had filled with concrete.

“Whatever story you believe, there’s an association between Howard Hughes and that slipper,” said Robert Chattel, a historic preservation consultant working with the museum. “This neon helps people understand the history of Las Vegas, that it was not necessarily the Strip we know today.”

The main-attraction Neon Boneyard is anything but a typical museum site. There are no restroom facilities and visitors are advised to wear close-toed shoes, as the yard features broken glass and rusty metal. The museum also got a nice write-up over the weekend in the New York Times.

Neon lighting

Fluorescent lighting style includes really brightly shiny, electrified cup pipes or lights that contain rarefied neon or other fumes. Fluorescent lighting style are a type of cold cathode gas-discharge mild. A neon pipe mild is a enclosed cup pipe with a steel electrode at each end, loaded with one of a number of fumes at low pressure. A high potential of several thousand v used to the electrodes ionizes the gas in the pipe, causing it to release shaded mild by fluorescence. The color of the mild relies on the gas in the pipe. Fluorescent lighting style were known as for neon, a royal gas which gives off a well-known red mild, but other fumes and substances are used to produce other shades, such as helium (yellow), co2 (white), and mercury (blue). Fluorescent pipes can be designed in bending creative forms, to form characters or images. They are mainly used to make extraordinary, various shaded shiny signs for advertising, called neon signs, which were well-known from the Twenties to the Nineteen fifties.

The term can also consult the small neon light, designed in 1917, about seven years after neon pipe lighting style. While neon pipe lighting style are typically yards long, the neon lighting style can be less than one centimeter in length and shine much more dimly than the pipe lighting style. Through the Seventies, neon shine lighting style were commonly used for shows in gadgets, for small attractive lighting style, and as technology in of themselves. While these lighting style are now items, the technology of the neon shine light designed into modern lcd shows and tvs.
